Idol Minds Brewing Company created a supper club to introduce IMBC brews in a medium all people love. FOOD! They strive to prepare food that will pair well with the brew of choice. Visit idolmindsbrewing.blogspot.com for more details.

After brunch in the sun and three hours on a party bus, my shakey hands captured a warm night in an Ocean Boulevard apartment, where 20+ people gathered to eat, drink, and be merry.

WEEK NO. 06

Olivia, Monteverde, Costa Rica, 2012.

I wish I could carve a few hours out of my weekend to invite a friend or stranger over for coffee and dessert and a small shoot. But given that I’ve been absent for six weeks, I’ve realized this goal is too lofty. Instead, I’ll pull portraits from recent travels and projects… like this photograph of Olivia - the adorable German girl who tagged along our three-hour hike in the cloud forest of Monteverde.

WEEK NO. 05

Leanna, San Francisco, CA, 2012.

I’ve known this pretty lady for 10 years. We have a long history that I won’t get into… because what matters more than the context of how we met and our parallel life, is the past three years that we’ve been in the Bay.

By day she’s busy researching protein chemistry. By night she’s listening to Lauryn and painting beautifully moody black and white portraits. Some nights alongside me. When we play catch up, be each other’s sounding board, complain, daydream, drink wine, eat chocolate, drink beer, make stuff, be about it…

All things we should’ve been doing when we first met. When we were young and naive.

Last night we stopped by the new neighborhood wine bar. A bottle of Malbec and two flammekueche later, we were strolling past Shonda on Clarion Alley, planning the next adventure: a tag team triathlon. (Dibs on the bike!)

WEEK NO. 04

Alex, San Francisco, CA, 2012.

There is much to be said about this boy, but I won’t bore you. It’s all cheese anyway.

What I will tell you, though, is that he picks the right battles, says all the right jokes, takes out the trash, and knows exactly when I’m hungry. What more can I ask for?

WEEK NO. 03

Sabrina, Pasadena, CA, 2008.

Sabrina is one of the strongest, most selfless people I know. She strides through adversity with the kind of grace I wish I had, never allowing herself to be disillusioned by others.

I dragged her to that dark art school studio on the hill one warm midsummer night. In a matter of minutes she was under the light, radiating this beautiful, natural energy. It’s exactly what I love about her. There’s an ease about her and our friendship, despite how long it’s been since we’ve seen or talked to each other.

Roommates for two years, friends for ten and many more to come.

WEEK NO. 02

Max, Palo Alto, CA, 2010.

In a past life, Max was twice my co-worker and many times my airport chauffeur. He introduced me to the Orange Sauce at La Vic’s and made fun of my love for Jamiroquai. I introduced him to art & design and made fun of his one season modeling stint with Gap.

We did a small shoot for his portfolio one early summer evening before he left for an opportunity abroad. Now, after a year and a half working hard and breaking hearts in Shenzhen, China, word on the street is he’s moving back to the Bay Area.

WEEK NO. 01

Tonya, Menlo Park, CA, 2010.

Together we’ve driven countless miles to gypsy jazz and wine country, endured a whirlwind trip to Moscow by way of Italy, and danced enough steps in Buenos Aires to last a lifetime. But in between these adventures were the quiet moments in that tiny Menlo Park apartment that meant so much more.

Though she’s currently loving Cape Town, South Africa, I know she’ll be back to rejoin the paint parties one day.

Bonjour, 2012

New Year. Fresh Blog.
New Photos. Fresh People.

Recently re-inspired by I Live Here: SF, I’m finally starting a long-imagined project. Each week I’ll photograph and profile a friend, an acquaintance, a citizen of the world, a somebody on the street. I’ll share these shots and short stories with you here.

If you’d like to be profiled and live in the San Francisco or Los Angeles Area (or want to fly me across the world to you), email me @ info@maddalenna.com.

Merci!
